Commencing from Hyun A’s visual analysis of the 17th century Dutch broken tulips, the idea of breakers has haunted her both as a visual index and as an essential conceptual strategy in her practice. O.E. and The Black Tulip focused on bodily movements show her artistic navigation in recent 6 years.

Artist’s note

O.E. (Orpheus Eurydice) 2021

O.E. is my performance and video work. Though the concept of O.E. is based on the ancient Greek myth, it conveys my strong desire to transform my sense of loss and pain into a force of change - a power to find my new identity within myself and with other women performers. In O.E., 3 performers become Orpheus, Eurydice and the Sphinx. The taboo of looking back is no longer the focal point of the male protagonist Orpheus. Instead, I elicit a very physical embodiment (being) of these characters, focusing on the body existing as a breathing entity of heat, flesh, skin, bone and muscles. I refuse to portray Eurydice as a noble, harmless and fragile being destined to wait for her lover’s rescue. My interest in the Sphinx, a monstrous creature asking humans riddles, continues in this work.

 O.E. Score 3: Sliding Feet which Remember, B&W and color, 7’ 25”, 2021

The three monsters (3 Orpheuses, 3 Eurydices, 3 Sphinxes) resist and struggle with their own pain as singularities, yet they also confront it as a unit, transforming their private struggles into solidarity and friendship between women to survive in Korean culture and society. In O.E., there is both an isolated and collective embodiment that willingly breaks through borders, as a breaker against the law of binaries. Two questions arise: “What motivation and what kind of drive can inspire them to move?” and “How, why and what do we look back at this very moment?”

O.E. Score 4: The Pain of Sphinxes, Single-channel video, sound, colour, 18’ 10”

I imagined the hand that Orpheus holds is not Eurydice’s but the Sphinx’s. The Sphinx is a mysterious being who throws riddles to humans like Oedipus. It ultimately meets its own death when Oedipus answers its riddle correctly. I perceive a strange connection between the idea of dying out (going out of existence) or disappearance, and Eurydice and the Sphinx. Therefore, three Eurydices expand into more than one body that is both singular and collective as well as a human-animal-machine-monster. three Sphinx-Eurydices who constantly oscillate between stillness and movement while trying to push their upper and lower bodies in different directions. The three performers communicate as and embody the ghost of Sphinx through touch, sucking on skin and bone, and exchanging heat, sweat, weight, muscle and energy as if they are a monster.

Dramaturg’s note
Kim Junghyun

The desire for beauty created by a rupture and its intertwined dreams and nightmares have been on Hyun A’s thoughts for a long time. The broken tulips have fascinated her. Creating beauty and material possessions in relation to the desires of humankind based on capitalism led to the manifestation of madness in the tulip history of the West, though tulips were not indigenous to the region. In fact, it was a heterogeneous and hybrid style created by injecting a virus into the imported goods from the East. Hyun A’s research continued with Alexandre Dumas’s novel “The Black Tulip (1850)”. To her, the legendary flower that overcomes all adversity and hardship in the story of a lover who strives to cultivate the black tulip implicitly reveals that there is a new ‘possibility for transformation’ that escapes from the old legacies of colonialism, which had projected European desires by transforming them into the Other. In Dumas’s family history, the existence of his grandmother, who was a black slave from Haiti prompted Hyun A look at the desires contained in black tulips from a different perspective.

The Black Tulip, Score 5: The Mad Tulip’s Dance, 7 min., 2022

Becoming black and being black. The notion of blackness neither simply reminds us of the oppressive life of the enslaved black population nor consolidate them with a sense of resignation. Rather, it makes us think about the power of and capacity for transformation. If a camouflaged soldier on a battlefield blends into his/her environment, camouflaging like the black tulip entails an individual’s metamorphosis into a subject of resistance by grandstanding and showcasing his/her physical ability.

The dramaturg, Kim Junghyun, pays attention to the fact that Western dance was developed from a style with historical roots in the court dances of aristocrats. Unlike Western dance, African dance, which reflects militant aspects of the indigenous people’s culture, developed into various forms of martial arts dance. The characteristics of African dance include using rapid leg movements in an intense percussional rhythm. The colonial rulers considered these movements a threat, so they tightly controlled them. Feminist philosopher Elsa Dorlin points out that the indigenous body is in a state rife with the “muscular tension of every moment” because of the continuous repression and control (“Se defender”, 2017).
The power of blackness is revealed through the language of the bodily movements in the dance of Emmanuel Sanou(Emma), a choreographer from Burkina Faso. Emma has great knowledge of African dance traditions and physical sense. While reflecting on life from the perspective of a subject who can resist, Emma tenses the muscles throughout his entire body, and the heavy vibration of condensed power reveals the sense of outburst and exhaustion. Hyun A also leave traces of another rupture by emphasizing and/or erasing the power of blackness through the language connected to editing the videos.

While working with writing, drawing, installation, video, sound, performance, 3D and VR, Hyun A is an ardent investigator searching for breakers. Commencing from her visual analysis of the 17th- century Dutch broken tulips, the idea of breakers has haunted her not only as a visual index in terms of representation but also as an essential conceptual strategy to intervene, disrupt, crack and split her art practice overall. Hyun A’s interest in performance in general focuses on bodily movements that reflect the finitude of the human body and the motivation that drives dancers to move.

Concerned with points of rupture, or the singularity - a breaker - that emerges from the ambiguities of our human condition and reality, Hyun A tries to weave both her studio and writing practices around the imaginative, psychological and physical spaces of (im)possibility as well as around the state of the undetermined that is derived from divergent times, histories, private and collective memories and languages. Hyun A had a solo exhibition I would like to hear someone’s voice (Cake Gallery, Seoul, South Korea, 2016), I would like to hear someone’s voice. The radio is my only friend. (Art Sonje Center, Seoul, South Korea, 2017), Nohwa I (An empty building in Hapjeong-dong, Seoul, South Korea) and The Black Tulip: Flesh and Bone (MMCA Changdong residency gallery 1 and 2, 2022).
