<기억의 전환>은 영국에서 살아가는, 특히 강요된 이주의 경험을 가진 2세대 이주민들의 기억에 관한 작업이다. 이들의 이주는 대부분 부모의 결정으로 이루어졌으며, 더 나은 교육과 삶의 질을 위해 이주한 경우부터 목숨을 걸고 북한 국경을 넘어 수년에 걸쳐 영국에 도달한 경우까지 그들의 – 혹은 그들의 부모가 그들에게 설명하였을 – 이주의 목적과 과정은 다양하다. 본 퍼포먼스는 관객의 앞이 아닌 작은 방에서 카메라 몇 대를 놓고 진행되었다. 붉은 점토 덩이들이 놓인 작은 책상을 사이에 두고 작가와 참여자가 마주 앉고, 참여자는 준비된 질문들에 답을 한다. 이때 화면 밖에 앉아있는 질문자가 준비된 질문지를 읽어 내려가게 되는데, 작가는 질문자와 참여자 사이의 대화에 일체 개입하지 않는다. 참여자는 대화를 이어가며 순간순간 떠오르는 기억의 잔상들을 점토로 형상화하며, 작가는 참여자가 만든 형상들을 흉내내어 비슷한 모양의 점토 형상들을 만든다. 이 작업은 언어화된 기억 이면의 감정과 잔상들이 점토로 ‘전환’될 수 있다는 작가의 믿음에서 출발한다. 또한 마주앉아 흙으로 기억의 모양을 만들고, 그것을 작가가 흉내내는 일련의 과정을 통해 나의 기억이 타인의 기억으로 다시금 ‘전환’되는 과정 또한 실험해보려는 것이다. 참여자에게 주어진 질문들은 다음과 같다.

당신의 나라는 어디입니까?
당신의 고향은 어디입니까?
당신의 고향에 대해서 이야기 해주실 수 있습니까?
당신은 언제 처음 영국에 왔습니까?
처음 영국에 도착했을 때의 느낌은 어땠습니까?
당신이 생각하는 안전한 장소는 어디입니까?
집에 대한 기억을 공유해 주시겠습니까?
새로운 장소에서 살게 되면서 불편했던 점은 무엇입니까?
당신은 이방인이라는 단어를 어떻게 생각하십니까?
그런 감정을 느낀 적이 있다면 얘기해 주실 수 있습니까?
Shifting Memory into Clay is a performance work that explores memories of the second-generation immigrants living in the UK. As second-generations, a decision to move to a new country and settle down there was not their own choice but their parents’. Purposes and processes of their displacement vary, as some of their parents decided to move to the UK for the better quality of life or education; others defected North Korea and took a route to third – or many more – countries such as China until they reached the UK. In this performance, each participant is asked to answer the questions related to their memory of displacement while shaping clay that is laid on the table in front of them. The questions are asked by another person who is sitting outside the camera’s angle, and the artist does not join the conversation but keeps imitating the shapes of clay that the participant creates. By creating replicas of the shaped clay, which embodies the participant's memory that is not represented by language, the artist aims to experiment the possibility of shifting and sharing memories of displacement. The questions asked to the participants are as follow:
How long have you lived here?
Where is your country?
Where is your hometown?
Can you tell me a bit more about your hometown?
When did you first arrive in the UK?
How did you feel when you first arrived in this country?
Where do you think is the safest place for you?
Can you share your memory of home?
What made you most uncomfortable after you moved to a new country?
What do you think about the word ‘stranger’?
If you have ever felt that you were a stranger, can you tell me about that experience?

정나영은 점토와 몸을 소재로 사적 감정과 사회적 정체성에 대해 이야기하는 작가이다. 미국 캘리포니아 컬리지 오브 아트와 로드 아일랜드 스쿨 오브 디자인에서 각각 학부와 석사 과정을 마친 후 런던으로 이주하여 최근 유니버시티 컬리지 런던 소속의 슬레이드 스쿨 오브 아트에서 순수 예술로 박사 학위를 마쳤다. 런던을 중심으로 활동하며, 상테부르크 시립 박물관, 뉴욕 한국문화원 등 세계 각지에서 개인전을 가졌다. 현재 도자 및 퍼포먼스 관련 국제 레지던시에 활발하게 참여하며 강의 및 작품 활동을 이어가고 있다.
Nayoung Jeong is an artist who explores personal feelings and social identity that evolve around her experience of cultural displacement. Using clay and her own body, her work has steadily evolved over the past decade from a human-scale installation to a performance that invites broader audience participation. Having studied in California College of Arts (BFA) and Rhode Island School of Design (MFA), she recently completed her PhD in Fine Art at Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. She has participated in many artist residency programmes globally and included in numerous exhibitions worldwide. Her recent exhibitions include Memories of a New Home at State Museum And Exhibition Centre Rosizo, Saint-Petersburg and A Dance of Scale at Assembly Point, London.
